With a CD, Faust? It was not recognising the CD in the drive!

This may be a silly question , are you sure the cd in question is blank ?

But even if the CD was not blank, should it not still be recognised?

By the way, I just checked it again and it's a DVD - I guess that makes a difference?? And it is indeed blank!

Maybe I should try putting a blank CD in then to do backup?

If it is just a cd drive , then yes , a cd is needed . Are you using a cd/dvd burning program (example : Nero) , or are you just using Window's native burning tool (right click on a file , & sending it to your cd/dvd drive) ?

I have not even got to the point of using any software, Faust. It just won't recognise that there is a Disc in the drive.

I always thought that the CD drivers did not load in Safe Mode - but maybe I am wrong!

I'm assuming this laptop has XP? From a search I did...

"Windows Safe Mode will allow CD drive access from both XP and Vista, but not with Windows 2000 Pro."

Can you burn discs from Safe Mode?
I've backed up files to a USB stick from Safe Mode, but I've never tried to burn CDR's or DVDR's from Safe Mode.

That a good question, middletoe. Since Safe Mode only loads the minimum drivers, it may not load the CD burner drivers. I don't know as I've never tried it. I did find a reference at the EHow website that there was a registry tweak you could do in order to burn optical media in Safe Mode.

I will just use flash drives to do the back-up. I can't even remember what exactly is on this laptop any more!

But first............... I have to find those Recovery discs that came with the laptop LOL!

Hope your search is more successful than the one I did yesterday for a game CD! I was going to loan it to someone and looked forever and never found it - found the box, but it was empty!!

Well, I sure hope that I don't have the same problem as you. Cos, you know, Girl Friday organised my house and possessions, so they could be anywhere!

My problem is I can't remember anything anymore! The worst thing is that hubby is just as bad. As he's putting something somewhere, he'll look at me and say, "Now, help me remember where I'm putting this." I just look at him and burst out in laughter! I mean... are ya kidding me? Neither one of can remember from one minute to the next!

Oh my goodness - I thought it was only me having these sort of problems - but at least there is two of you there to look for the missing items.

I bought the "babies" their Christmas presents a month ago, but I have searched high and low for them, and still can't find them. They won't mind, I am sure - I will just share my turkey with them!

The chances are good you are stuck then. About the only way to deal with this would be to take it in to a PC repair shop. Bummer.

This is one of the reasons I either build my own or have them built - you get ALL the actual disks, not just some recovery disks. I have several big manilla envelopes and I put all the operating system and driver disks in it and label it for each computer so I can find them if I ever need to.
