My friend Kath here in Sanday wants to buy her husband a laptop for Christmas but she does not have a great deal of money - I was looking at the Samsung Chromebook - What do they mean by "The Samsung Chromebook is a web-only device"? Does it mean that you cant play games on it?

Not Windows games, at least. It runs Chrome OS, so more similar to a mobile Android/iOS device than a PC - it's designed for web stuff and uses a closed 'app store' model, it just happens to look like a laptop.

A couple of things to ask are #1, what he would intend to do with it and #2, what is her budget.

I dont think he knows himself what he wants to do with it, Drac, as he has never used a computer before. So it's a bit of a grey area.

Her budget is only around £300 which I know is not very much.

You could get a reasonable netbook for that, I should think - maybe try Dell?

Does a netbook have a smaller screen, Phlebas? He really wanted a 15" screen, I think.

He was extremely interested in my Google Nexus but personally I think they are too fiddly and small for a first time novice to get to grips with.

He won't be able to get much for that budget, but then if he's a first time computer user, he really won't need much.
