Yes, I will do as you suggest, middletoe, and see how it runs first.

I have just bought this Windows XP PC for £50 from the same guy who sold me the car:-

Midi Tower
40x CD Writer
8 x DVD writer
AMD 3000+
1.5GB DDR RAM
128MB Geforce graphics card
220GB Hard drive
Multi card reader
8 x USB
Firewire
20GB DAT drive although not connected as DVD writer is better but I will have a SCSI card somewhere.
Windows XP
Keyboard
Mouse
17" LCD monitor (not widescreen)

You know me, folks - I like to keep spares of everything, even though I am no longer living in darkest Africa - and Neil will just put it in the car for me, and send it over on the ferry. It seemed like the simplest way to buy a spare secondhand PC. I sure know what i will be doing on those long Winter days here! I have literally hundreds and hundreds of old games to play............

Now, THAT sounds like a nice low end PC for all your old games. And what a deal for £50!

You're getting some real bargains, Rosa, they both sound like good deals. Your new car looks very well kept, but that's as much as I'd know, since I'm one of the rare breed of North Americans who has never owned a car or learned to drive in my life. Instead we live in an area with convenient buses and a large shopping centre a 10 minute walk away. We simply could not live on your beautiful island!

For sure, you have to be well organised with your shopping here, Diat, and you have to keep plenty of food supplies etc just in case the weather turns "funny" and the ferries can't run - and spares of everything!

That reminds me - I must get myself sorted out with car insurance this afternoon.

You got an amazing deal on that XP computer. It even has a decent video card for older games.

Oh, I am so glad you think so, middletoe - I just bought it on an impulse without looking too much into the specs - Because sometimes it's hard to get big items delivered to this Island, so I just bought it for convenience of delivery really. But now I am so pleased that I made a good purchase!

The PC is coming on the ferry tomorrow! BUT I dont have time to even set it up yet. the house is in utter chaos with packing boxes and furniture piled up everywhere, after the delivery of my container last weekend.

Wheels tomorrow! That XP computer can be a good project for a rainy day sometime after you're all settled in. Which reminds me that we're still awaiting the results of the container story. What all did you lose?

I am being brave today, and have started to gently dust and then wash down all my furniture - Only then will I see exactly what damage has been done, apart from the obvious damage I have already seen. I have just found my phone cable, so I am also taking photos of the damage, and will post them here once I have my broadband internet connection back up and running.

Well, at least it sounds like it wasn't all completely shattered to bits as it sounded when you first posted about it. These photos might help if you need to file a claim too.

The stupid lorry driver at the Port was being over dramatic, Drac - I wondered at the time how high quality hardwood furniture could actually get smashed to pieces like he said!

All my furniture was in pristine condition with not one scratch on any of it when it left Kenya, and now I am afraid there are deep gouges and scratches in quite a few places. The Customs team are now saying that they left the furniture as they found it, i.e. with NO protective covering of any kind on it.

Whereas in fact I watched the removals team put bubble wrap AND corrugated cardboard all around every single piece of furniture, after which I personally strapped my very heavy cushions and cushion seatings on to every single piece also. Yet another legal headache to sort out! And I am told I don't have a hope in Hell of making a successful claim against them.

I would find being told you don't have a hope in Hell to simply be a challenge. Surely, there is some documentation of how the items were packed by the removals team initially to blow their claim to bits?

Oh, how I wish that I had taken photos as the furniture was being loaded into the container at my Kilifi house. but who would ever had thought such photos would be necessary???

Oh yes, I am for sure up to the challenge of making a claim against them - Someone has to pay for all this damage, and I don't want it to be me! - It's just time is against me just now because my days are filled with unpacking, walking dogs, cooking for me and the dogs, out to lunch with new friends, etc etc

You know, I'm wondering if the container was unpacked and repacked in Kenya after all.

I don't think it could have been - At least I hope not - It was locked by the Mombasa Customs man in my presence at my house.

I've been searching for any mention of UK Customs liability and can't find a word anywhere. Basically, they don't seem to be liable for anything! Could be you could land up just putting in an insurance claim for damages.
