I'm wondering too - which game will be first!

So, I guess this means you are finally connected to the internet on the new PC! What was the final solution? I know they were sending a new router with hopefully a stronger signal and you had also ordered the PowerLine devices.

EDIT: Just got your Facebook message. Woo hoo for PowerLine!!!!

Now, don't get too excited, guys - I never said I was ready to play a game yet - I still have the sound to sort out.

So I thought, let PC Specialist do some work for a change to help me get set up, so I emailed Luke and asked him where do I plug in the 2 gold connections for the Sound Blaster device and his answer was.................... You don't plug that device in because you won't be needing it.......................... God give me strength........ so I just bought this piece of equipment for nothing? It's just an ornament on my desk????

Good grief, whether he thinks you need it or not, he should tell you where to plug it in! But you actually didn't pay for that device - you paid for the sound card. The controller is an accessory.

That link I sent you to the Quick Start Guide tells you how and were to plug it in. I grabbed a screenshot of the page that tells you...

But if it comes with the sound card, why would he not think I dont need to use it? Am I right in thinking that I plug my headphones into it? Or am I once again getting confused?

No power tomorrow all day long, while they do scheduled maintenance on our electricity supply - I better get both the laptops charged up............. or maybe I should do some housework for once eh?

And that's the point of that little accessory - instead of plugging headphones etc. into the back of the PC, you can just plug them into the Control Module. A very nice feature. I think he told you that because he didn't know where to plug them in either. I still can't believe they didn't include the Quick Start Guide for your sound card with all your other manuals and paperwork. Did they think you were supposed to just guess about what to do? Maybe they just forgot it.

Well, I told them today that I had not owned a desktop in about 15 years, so it would be a really good idea to in future provide a little information to us newbies on how to hook up all the cables. Like I said before, their Customer Support stinks.

And after also telling Luke today that there was indeed a hardware problem on my old laptop, when he said it was a software/internet connection issue, proven by the fact that the USB wireless adapter worked, he just said, sorry but your laptop is now out of warranty. I replied back that he told me NOT to send it back just now as they were snowed under with work, and that that is the very reason that the warranty has now expired!

I fail to follow his reasoning that ANOTHER piece of hardware (the USB wifi adapter) resolved the connection issues (albeit with the slow connection) when their piece of hardware (wifi adapter integrated into the motherboard) would not. Most likely nothing they could have resolved without replacing the entire motherboard which I'm sure they didn't want to do.

I suppose it could have been a software issue if the problem was related to the drivers.
Also if the laptop was never able to connect properly to the router you've been using, there might be a hardware incompatibility between the onboard wireless in the laptop and the wireless router. Replacing the laptop's motherboard would not fix a hardware incompatibility unless they used a different version of the motherboard with a different onboard wireless. The only cure for that would be something like what you're using -- a USB wireless adapter (or other external wireless adapter).

But this happened quite suddenly when this laptop had been connecting to the wifi using the same router just fine for almost 3 years. One day, it wouldn't connect any more and even after hours of attempts to reinstall drivers etc. by their techs, there was no change. As soon as she installed a USB wifi adapter, she connected just fine. That's why I think it was hardware.

But, who knows... wifi is a tricksey thing!

I hadn't been keeping track. Unless the ISP changed something about the way their router connected, it does sound like something went bad with hardware. Even if replacing the motherboard on that model laptop wasn't an option, it would have been a nice gesture for the shop to offer to send a wireless adapter that connected via USB.

By the way, Drac, I forgot to mention that the Powerline came with 2 ethernet cables, so there was no need for me to order the 2 that came today!

I'm impressed! Ah, well... now you have extras for when you connect up another computer! I'm so glad the Powerline worked... I have an individual whose internet service comes into her house in a finished basement bedroom. She wanted to put her new computer in an upstairs room, but there was no connection there. I put in a WiFi adapter, but I really didn't think she would get enough signal for it. It worked, but the Powerline was going to be my next option, so I'm so glad to know it works!

So, how are you getting along with Windows 8.1? I have LOTS of tips and tricks for it, so let me know if you need anything. Plus, the Windows 8.1 Update was released yesterday which gives us mouse and keyboard lots of new goodies!

I have not had time to even switch the new baby on today - I got sidelined with the new building projects plus trying to sort out manpower to create a new vegetable patch out of a dump site and slab over my small front garden - but tomorrow morning I shall tackle the sound hook-up.

The power cut yesterday has knocked the Powerline out, but I guess I just have to set it up again.
