Need your advice on a gaming computer

Postby Ghostlady » Fri Nov 28, 2014 10:42 am

My grandson wants this computer.

He plays a lot of games off of Steam. Do you think this one will be a good gaming box?

In a word, no. That GTX 640 is a very low end video card. That 400 watt power supply is a tad on the puny side too. I also don't like that on these computers, they don't tell you what kind of motherboard they have used.

What kind of games does he play from STEAM? Does he have a budget?

I notice it's only got Windows 8 on it, not Windows 8.1. No big deal, but he would have some serious upgrades to do.

As a much better starting point, I would suggest going to eCollegePC and simply clicking on the Core i5 computer in the middle of the "featured computer systems." That will give you a better idea of decent gaming computer components - of course, you still have to add in the operating system. If I go to the Custom Builder option and select the highest end Core i5 (without the K which means it's unlocked for overclocking), upgrade the motherboard, get the GTX 750Ti video card, add 8 GB of RAM, a 1 TB hard drive, the optical drive, the operating system and upgrade the case (the Cougar Spike is too small for a gaming computer and doesn't have enough cooling fans), it comes up to $861. eCollegePC will build you a computer for pretty much what you could build it for yourself, plus you get your actual operating system and driver discs and a 3 year parts and labor warranty.

Didn't you have them build your PC?

I'm trying to get my daughter to go through them. I think with this post it will convince her. Yes, I did have my my pc built through them and haven't had any problems. It rocks. I'll find out more about the games he plays. Thanks Drac, you're the best!

OK... those aren't the highest game requirements, but if he wants to play Far Cry 4 or something like that some day, he's going to need some hefty components. My recommendations are to get the most CPU and video card you can afford.

EDIT: One phone conversation later and I think you're on your way!

Just for fun I went over to eCollegePC an plugged in (as best I could) all the individual components I purchased eight months ago and the total was only about 70$ more than the original total so I agree that is a good place to check out for a custom build. The only significant change (as I expected) was the price drop for SSDs, and of course the better processor although I have to admit the one I have never breaks a sweat with any thing I do. Decided to retire the old HD6870 video card since I was experiencing some rather dismal frame rates with Dreamfall Chapters especially while inside buildings. With just a single 1080P monitor, both the GTX 970 and R9 290 appeared on the brink of overkill so I went with the cheaper.

A $70 increase isn't bad at all. I don't remember... which processor did you end up getting?

I ended up getting the 4770k. From what I've seen many have already replaced it with the 4790k but as my previous processor was a core duo E8400 I won't be joining that camp. Besides, the mb has OC Genie for safe mild overclock anyway.

That's a great CPU... I'm too chicken to OC!

I'll post after Christmas. Someone may be snooping around. He keeps asking his mother about the video card and specs. I told her not to tell. Knowing ruins the anticipation!
