Monkey island madness
Monkey island madness
I put my old monkey island madness disk in my computer and I know that it totally runs off the disk - so I was hoping that it would work. I keep getting a parameter error. so then I went to my computer, the d drive and did the compatibility thing for windows 98 and it still won't work. Is this game off limits on my newer machine or can I get it to work? thanks.
Re: Monkey island madness
What operating system do you have on the computer? What exactly does the error message say?

Re: Monkey island madness
I am using windows 7. It says the parameter is incorrect. Since it runs right off the disk I was thinking I could get it to run..... especially since I did the compatibility thing.
Re: Monkey island madness
So you went to the disk and found the execution file, right clicked it and went through the motions of compatibility, right? Did you try any others such as NT or even XP?

Re: Monkey island madness
hmmmm. No I didn't try something different. I will try that. thanks.
Re: Monkey island madness
Let me know if you get it working...

Re: Monkey island madness
I didn't get those games working, but, I did click on the demo of Monkey island 3 and that would load and work, however, the colors were off or the video or whatever you call it. So, I am sure it is my video card that is the culprit. I thought since these games played right off the disk that I wouldn't have to worry about compatibility or whatever. darn it.
Re: Monkey island madness
The good news is that some of the Monkey Island games are available at GOG.

Re: Monkey island madness
Monkey Island Madness was made for DOS, not Windows.
It worked in Windows 95 and 98, but the computer had to be configured to produce sound in DOS or you wouldn't get sound.
Since it is a DOS game (collection of two DOS games), it contains 16-bit code and you won't in a million years get it to work on 64-bit Windows without emulation.
It will work fine using either ScummVM or DOSBox.
ScummVM is probably easier --
Download the Windows version from http://www.scummvm.org/downloads/
For Monkey Island 1 copy MONKEY.000 and MONKEY.001 (or MONKEY1.000 and MONKEY1.001) from the CD to a folder on your hard drive. Whether it's MONKEY or MONKEY1 depends on your version of the game.
For Monkey Island 2 copy MONKEY2.000 and MONKEY2.001 to a folder on your hard drive.
Start ScummVM,
Choose the Add Game button,
Browse to the folder where you copied the MONKEY.000 and MONKEY.001 files.
ScummVM should recognize the game files and add the game to its menu.
Repeat for the MONKEY2.000 and MONKEY2.001 files
Play using ScummVM.

AHA! It is a DOS game... thank you for that help, middletoe. I don't use ScummVM, so maybe this will help mbday.

Re: Monkey island madness
I used ScummVM to play both Discworld and Toonstruck on my iMac, and they played just fine. It's an easy tool to use, and their website has a list of games that will work with the program.

Re: Monkey island madness
I will try that middletoe and thank you. I use scummvm for playing DOTT - and thanks for the instructions on how to do it. i have to take my mother to the dentist today so I will be gone all day but I will work on that tonight. And maybe I can get discworld to work using scumm too! I am very computer dumb so I'm hoping I can figure it out.
later.... middletoe, that worked perfectly. I can play the games using scumm. Just to be on the safe side, I also copied the exe file and put it in a folder and put the two folders in program files and I found it with scumm and they work! thanks. Now to try getting my discworld games to work. would discworld noir work using scumm too?

Re: Monkey island madness
ScummVM works with Discworld 1 and 2, but not Discworld Noir.
For a list of games that work with ScummVM, check
http://scummvm.org/compatibility/
For a list of what files are necessary to play the different games supported by ScummVM, check
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles
You don't need the original game exe.
ScummVM does use the game's data files, but the exe you're using is ScummVM itself, not the original DOS exe.
Now if you were using DOSBox, you'd need the game exe.
DOSBox and ScummVM work very differently.
