Re: What adventure game are you playing?

I'm back to playing Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, single-player. I had to get a replacement Mac a while ago, and when I installed the latest version of Diablo II LOD on the replacement iMac, it wouldn't run! And Blizzard doesn't have the installers (or upgrade patches) available for download (or purchase, I suspect) for anything but the latest versions. :(. Luckily, I found a back-up of the complete game that I made when I was rushing to back everything up as my former Mac was failing, on an external drive.

CAUTION: If you are using a Mac, do NOT upgrade your version of Diablo II (or Diablo II LOD) past 1.14b or earlier, because the newer versions aren't compatible with the newer versions of Mac OS X. And be careful about playing online at Blizzard.net, because I believe it does automatic upgrades. :(

Yeah, same here for Diablo and Windows 10. What is does is block the DRM on the original discs. However, GOG is selling Diablo I with the Hellfire expansion pack as a download with the DRM removed. I am hoping for Lord of Destruction to be offered next!

I much prefer single player - tried the multi-player and didn't care for it.

Can you explain more? What blocks the DRM on the original discs, and how does that mess up the game if you upgrade it to the latest patch/version?

I've already paid for two copies of Diablo II and the LOD expansion over the years (so I could play with my ex over a LAN set-up).

Also, Blizzard took care of people who already bought the discs by allowing them to register the games registration numbers to their Blizzard account, and then the game(s) could be downloaded and installed directly from Blizzard without using the CDs at all. That's what I had been doing when I got a new Mac, but the latest versions of the game(s) really screwed things up (at least for the Mac OS).

Like I said above, luckily, I had backed up the whole installed game and not just the installers, or I wouldn't be able to play.

Starting with Windows 8 and 10, Windows started blocking certain forms of DRM. It deemed them to be a sufficient threat to block them from being installed, therefore the games couldn't be installed. They aren't wrong about the DRM being a real problem, but I'd rather they'd allowed me to decide.

I didn't know they allowed you to register your games and then download directly from Blizzard. I definitely might try that with Lord of Destruction. I did get Diablo I and the Hellfire expansion from GOG though and it was great fun.

Good luck! I hope that the downloadable upgraded versions for Windows work for you, Draclvr.

Well, I hoped so too! I downloaded both of them and when I go to install Diablo II, it asks for my 26 character CD key. Except that my CD key is only 16 characters and it won't accept it! I checked and the CD key for the LOD Expansion is also only 16 characters. I posted in the forums and if I don't get any help there, I'll submit a support ticket.

Maybe it's because my CD keys are for the original disks before any patches or upgrades are applied.

Yeah, mine were, too. Did you register the game on the Blizzard.com website? I think they had a way to deal with people that had the old 16 number code. I wish I could remember exactly how to do it, but you create and account (or use the one you already have) then register all of your games (except the old "legacy" ones like the original Diablo and Warcraft and Warcraft II which they don't update anymore, and it seems also StarCraft and its expansion for the Mac) using your codes, and then you can download the full games...

"Some Blizzard Classic Games require a game key attached to your Blizzard account to be played"

I just checked my account and I have Diablo II and Warcraft III and their expansions registered, but it is showing the longer game keys for all of them... and I don't remember how they handled my Diablo II LOD 16 number keys to register the game(s) and give me a new game key... :(

This is what I found on their site:
https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/11263

It doesn't give particulars... :(

But here is the URL for Account Overview:
https://account.blizzard.com/overview

BUT you need to have or create a Blizzard.com (or Battle.net) Account first.

Then any games that you have registered will show up under Games & Subscriptions: https://account.blizzard.com/games with their key codes.

I did create an account, but I don't know how to register a game. I will look in some of your links.

EDIT: The first link was for redeeming a purchase code. The second one just took me to my account overview. I try to find something on registering a game.

It only works for games they still support, though. I couldn't register my older games (Diablo, Starcraft + Broodwar, and Warcraft and Warcraft II) and I remember talking to someone (on the phone -- remember phone support??? ) there who said that they couldn't be registered for the Mac because they weren't sold or offered as downloads anymore.

I think you just type the key code into the space where it says "redeem a code" at https://account.blizzard.com/overview when you are logged in.

Then if you look here:
https://account.blizzard.com/games

it should show you which games and expansions you have registered.

I honestly don't remember what I did, because it was years ago...

Oh, this is important. When you have registered the game, not only will it be listed here:
https://account.blizzard.com/games
with the license key showing, but also there will be a link next to it called "Download Game Client"

and if I remember correctly, that link takes you to a page to download the installer(s) for the game (or expansion) you registered, which once downloaded, if clicked/opened, will download the latest version of the game.

Hmm, it appears that they now offer Starcraft for the Mac. Maybe I should dig out my CDs and see if I can register it and Broodwar... but maybe not tonight!
EDIT: No, it's only for Starcraft Anthology owners, I guess (I have the Battlechest) because my code is only 13 numbers...

It appears there is no way to register the game until you have it installed. And I can't install the game, so I can't register it! I downloaded the Battle.net desktop app which at least gave me the option to register the game.

That's weird. You should just be able to just log in to your account, type in the 16 number code (if you have one) at the Account Overview section there, and then get a license key after it is registered (which would show up in the Games & Subscriptions section of your account.

Let me know if the Battle.net app lets you register, okay?

I will!

EDIT: Finally! When I went to that Account Overview page in my account and it asked to redeem a code, I assumed that meant a purchase game code and didn't realize it meant a CD Key! Anyway, I still had to do a bit of searching to find where they generated the 26 character Key Code I need to install the download. The game still doesn't show up in my Games and Subscriptions, but whatever. I've got my Diablo LOD back! It's been YEARS since I've been able to play. You were the one who turned me on to the game and now you're the one who helped me get it back! Thank you!

I think I'm going to split off this part of the thread to a new discussion over on the Dark Side. Not many people hang out here any more, but we get more searches than people realize!
