Week 3 - Labyrinth of Laments
You are about to enter the legendary Labyrinth of Laments. The instructions through the maze have been written out for you, so follow them very carefully. During your journey, you will meet many forlorn or discontented characters who are missing something from their lives. Listen to what they say and remember where they are located. (Yes, the colored shapes you see are important.) You will also find many items scattered all over the labyrinth. Please note the names of these items and where you found them. When you reach the end of the maze, you will have a task to complete. How well you do on this task will determine your score, which could be as high as 200 points. This puzzle ends on Friday, October 10, 2008 at 10:00 PM EDT (GMT -5 hours). Good luck, and don't forget your compass!

The entrance to the labyrinth is in the NW corner. Begin by stepping E, S, W, S, W, and N. You encounter a frustrated mummy who complains that his wrappings keep coming undone. Step S, then walk E to the wall. Move N, E, S, E, N, W, N, and then E to the opening in the north wall. Move N, then pick up a juicy ripe tomato.
Continue W to the opening in the south wall, then move S, W, S, and W. Here you meet a pathetic monster who whimpers to you how awkward and out of place he feels in most formal social situations.
Go back to the spot where you picked up the tomato, then head S, E, S, E, N to the outside wall, then E, S, and E. Here you pick up a bottle of aspirin, then move N, E to the end of the hallway, and S. You talk to the sleepy zombie who frets that he just can’t stay awake all night anymore.
Return to the place you found the aspirin and proceed W, N, and W to the 1st opening in the south wall, then S to the 1st opening in the east wall. Step E into the 1st north-south corridor and go S, W, N, W, and S to the opening in the west wall. Head W and S, and stop at the end of the hallway to pick up 12 rhinestone bangle bracelets. Walk E, S to the end of the hall, W, S, and E to the end of the long hallway where you find a jar of fluorescent paint.
Turn around and stroll W to the other end of the hallway, go N to the 1st opening, then E. Here you meet an arthritic troll who gripes about how uncomfortable he gets when sitting on the rocky ground under his bridge while waiting for the billy goats to come trip-tropping along.
Go back to the place you found the bracelets, then perambulate N, E, S, E, S, E, N, E, and N to the opening in the east wall. Proceed E, N, and E. Here you will find a strong metal comb.
Now walk S to the 1st opening in the west wall, then step W and S to the 1st opening, and W again. Go S, W, N, E, and S. Here you meet a bored ghost who mutters that she’ll go mad if she doesn’t get a change of scenery soon.
Go back to the long hallway where you found the comb, then proceed S, E, S, E, S, W, and N. Pick up a long elastic strap in this dead-end passage. From here go S to the end of the hall, then saunter W, N, W, and S to the first opening in the east wall. Step E, then S.
Talk to the dragon and note that he is fuming about how tired he is of eating burnt and blackened food all the time.
Next go N, E, S, E, N E, N, and E to the wall. Then proceed N, E, N to the wall, then E, and S to the opening in the west wall. Step W, S, W, S, and E. Here you will find a meditation CD.
From the CD, go S to the 1st opening in the east wall, then walk E and S to the next opening in the east wall. Now ramble E, N, E, and N to the wall, then W, S, W, S, and W. Here you discover a handheld pencil sharpener.
Proceed all the way N and pick up a safety pin, then come south again to the opening in the west wall. Go W, N, and E. Here you meet a shivering rat who cries that the floors are too cold for his little paws.
Head back to the spot you found the CD, then stroll S to the stop, E to the outer wall, and N to the opening in the west wall. Next trudge W, N and E. Here you speak to the goddess Kali who kvetches that her wardrobe is so dull and in need of some bling.
From Kali, head W, S, E and N. Halfway up the long corridor you stumble over a megaphone. Picking it up, you find your way back to the hallway just west of the dragon. From there, go S, E, S, W, N, W, S, and E to the end. Head N, W, N, E all the way, then S, E, S, E, and S at the 1st opening in the south wall. Talk to the lonely orc who wails that girlfriend ran away and left him for someone with bigger teeth.
Now travel N, E, S, E, and S to pick up a tube of super glue, then mosey W, S, E, N, and W. Speaking to the disgruntled devil, you find out he’s been moping about because his horns have gotten too blunt with age.
From the devil, return to the hallway that had the comb. From the comb’s former spot, go S to the opening in the west wall, then step W and S to the end of the hallway. Walk W, S, W, S and E to find a nearly-fainting vegetarian vampire who is bemoaning the fact that he has nothing to satisfy his cravings.
From the vampire, shuffle W, S, W, S, W, S, E, N, E, S, W, S, E, S, E to the first north/south corridor, then walk S to the wall. You find a book called
Puttin’ on the Ritz Etiquette Handbook, then proceed W, N, and E. Nothing is here, so turn around and walk W and S to the opening in the west wall. Next, go W, N, and E. Talk to the grumpy werewolf who growls because of all the burrs that have gotten tangled in his fur.
Turn around and go W and N to the end of the hallway. Pick up a soft pillow, then meander W and S. Halfway along this very long passageway you locate 4 tiny woolen socks. Continue S to the end of the passage, then go E, N, W to the 1st opening, and N. Here you meet a jittery beast. He snivels to you about being a nervous wreck because of all the stress in his life. Step S, and continue W, N, E to the 1st opening, then N again, where you meet a depressed banshee who sighs because her voice is too soft for proper screeching and wailing.
From the banshee, step S to the 1st opening, then mosey E, S, E, S, W to the opening in the south wall, and S. Here you meet a rather dotty spider who whines that she keeps getting stuck in her own web because she forgets where the sticky strands are.
From the spider, step N, then stroll E, N, and W to the 1st opening. In this dead-end hall, pick up a strange electronic device, then find your way back to the place you found the etiquette book. From here go N to the second opening in the east wall and proceed E to the end of the passage. Pick up a Thermos of very strong coffee, then go N. Chat with the demon who bellyaches that he has been accused of stealing money but didn’t do it. He needs an alibi for the night in question, but his girlfriend is out of town.
Return again to the spot that had the etiquette book, but this time go N to the 1st opening, then proceed E, S, W, S, E, S, W and S. Go E to the 1st opening, then continue S, E, S, W, and S to the outside wall. Here you pick up a cookbook called
The Joys of Frying. From here trek W, N, W to the opening, N, and W. With your eyes covered, talk to the Gorgon who groans about the terrible headaches she gets when her snakes are active.
Ambulate back to the spot where you found the cookbook. Continue N to the opening in the east wall, then travel E, S, E, N, E, S, E, N, E, and N to the opening in the east wall. Stumble E and N to the wall, then go W, and N and grab a list of specialized dating services. Head E to the opening, then walk N, E, S, E, N, E, S and E to the second opening in the north wall, then step N. You look around, but no one is here, so you step S, then go W to the 1st opening. You step N where you stumble upon the
Vacation Guide to the Haunted Castles of Europe.Proceed E, S, E, N, W, S, and E. A grouchy centaur is here. He is upset because his right rear shoe keeps coming off, throwing him off balance. He has an appointment with the blacksmith at the end of the week, but hates hobbling around in the meantime.
Go back to the place you found the list of dating services. Go S, E, and S to the first opening in the east wall. Step E, N, E to the end of the hall, and N to meet the cyclops who is feeling blue because his monocle keeps falling out of his eye when he tries to read.
Step S and walk W to the wall. Toddle S, W, S to the wall, then E, N, E, S, and E to the 1st opening in the south wall. Step S, then W. At the end of the corridor is a handwritten note that says, “Dug was with me all nite. He dint do it. -Deeliela D.”
Now walk E, N, E, N, and E. An alien is standing by the exit door, but he won’t lower the force field until you give the items you found to the creatures who need them. To your relief, he tells you you don’t have to walk back through the labyrinth. All you have to do is tell his assistant, Quizmaster, what inventory item goes with what creature, and then give him the correct shape and color code for the creature. He will program this into the teleporter and send the items where they belong. You will earn 10 points for each correct combination of creature, inventory item, and code. There will be no second guesses for this puzzle, so consider your choices carefully before submitting them.
