You must choose two cards in order to:

(1) Defeat Ylli,
(2) Survive Ylli, or
(3) Be killed by Ylli.

I played through the game twice, and both times all of my cards had four stars, so I can't offer any commentary as to the star ratings. The first time through, I selected what I thought were the two strongest cards, based on the descriptions: the Wheel of Fortune and the Hanged Man. I got ending (1), the optimal result. The second time, I chose what I thought were the two weakest cards, the Five of Cups and the Five of Pentacles, and got ending (3), the "bad" ending. I think to get ending (2), you could choose one strong card and one weak card, or maybe two strong cards with weak star ratings, but I don't feel like trying it again
