I hated Joss Whedon. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a terrible movie made into an even worse TV series. I gave up after three episodes, and never even bothered trying Angel. But I found myself giving Firefly a try, due to the truly horrible selection of Netflix stuff available for instant streaming.

And it's the most fun I've had watching TV in years. I've watched seven episodes so far, and can't wait to finish the series and watch the movie.

I'm waiting for Firefly to arrive on Blu-Ray here as I've seen "Serenity" and enjoyed it. Intriguing how something like "Firefly" which was cancelled after one season has developed a following!

It was cancelled in less than a season. they only showed a few episodes on TV (in the wrong order) before pulling it. The DVD set at least has the full season's worth.

Thanks Jude - I don't really keep up with TV, watch stuff on DVD and Blu-Ray instead.

I bought the DVD set about a year ago because several people recommended it, but I still haven't had a chance to watch it.

I watched the series plus movie a few years ago and really enjoyed them. It's like a western in space.

Firefly is being rerun on the Science Channel.

Netflix indicates only 14 episodes. Are there more than that?

Nope, that's all the episodes. Fox cancelled it after about 6 episodes were shown. They never even showed all 14 episodes.

The movie, Serenity, continues the story.

I finished the series and the movie. Best sci-fi I've seen in a long, long time. I think what really grabbed me was the scene at the end of Ep. 2 (The Train Job) when Cpt. Mal kicks a merc into the ship's engine because the scumbag refuses to bargain with him. It set the tone for the rest of the series. These aren't your traditional "good guys" like the Enterprise crew. They do bad things. They do what they have to to do the job. Yes, they have honor (except for Jayne), but that honor has been tarnished by a big dose of surviving reality on the fringes of the galaxy.

Regarding Jayne--Having watched Chuck first, I couldn't help the continual feeling that Adam Baldwin was using Firefly to hone the "John Casey" character he plays on the later series.

Apparently the character of John Casey was written with Adam Baldwin in mind. I love Jayne and Casey...

There's great interplay between the characters, the extras on the Blu-Rays show a team of people working together almost as a family. A shame that the personal journeys that might have been told over more seasons never came to be.
