I have been with the ISP Wananchi Online for the past 9 years, and have had the same Wananchi email address all this time, it being my primary email address.

Today they are asking me for $100 for a year's subscription (this is the first request in about 4 years!), just so I can continue to use this email address. Why do ISPs still charge for this facility when you can get most email addresses for free these days? I am guessing I am only paying for the privilege of keeping my long-time email address??

And so, how do I go about telling everyone that I am no longer going to be using Wananchi, and informing them of my new email address? Is it ok to have, for example, Hotmail as your primary email address??

Be careful that it's not a scam, RB. You might want to do a search to see if this is actually a change in policy or just someone who's out for your money.

I use Eudora for my regular email, but have a gmail account for administrative stuff here at MM. Except for some non-intrusive ads, they're easy to use.

Some email services are like that . The search engine Lycos has a mail service they charge for . I think there are a couple others that also charge , but I can't remember them . There are plenty of other email services , such as gmail , yahoo , & hotmail (windows live mail) that are free . Unless I'm mistaken (I may very well be) Lady K , Eudora is just an email client .

I do agree with Lady K , check this out before you do much of anything . It may very well be a scam .

Regarding Eudora, it's an email program on my computer. It is not an online email service that stores emails there, but it checks my internet server at set intervals and holds them on my computer until I deal with them.

No, I dont store my emails at the Wananchi server - I just use it as a route for getting my emails.

And it's not a scam - I spoke to Mercy, the Wananchi Manager, yesterday about this, and she told me that it is their practice to charge for this facility.

I am on Windows 7, and therefore Windows Live Mail. Sorry, not really thinking straight at the moment, so please be patient with me here. If I cancel Wananchi, and use hotmail as my primary email address, are there any disadvantages or security problems in doing this?

And is there a Windows Live facility whereby I can inform everyone in my Contacts that I am no longer going to use Wananchi? I presume if anyone sends me an email to Wananchi, it will simply bounce back to them?

A shame that it's true Rosaboobie . As to informing your contacts about the switch to hotmail , that's something you will probably have to do yourself . A short note explaining after a certain date , you will no longer use your Wananchi address , & explain why . The only security troubles I've ever had with hotmail , is they're not quite as persistent about separating the spam from real mail as gmail is . You have to watch it a bit more . Other than that , I've not had any problems ! After you make the switch to hotmail , any email that comes to your Wananchi mail address will just stay there , in all probability .

Like Faust says, just sent out a mass email to all your contact containing your new email address. I'd recommend Gmail over Hotmail for the reason that Faust mentions. I've never gotten a single piece of spam in my Mystery Manor account or my personal account. I love the on-line storage that comes with it, although Hotmail may also offer some too. I also love the Google calendar for reminding me of stuff since I can't remember anything any more!

Run as far as you can from Yahoo... I have never had so much trouble with spam as I have with several people who are forced to use it through AT&T. Just dreadful.

You might also consider using the free Thunderbird email client. It is from Mozilla, which also has Firefox. I assume they would allow you to use their server to download mail to Thunderbird, but they many not.

OK, thanks for all the advice. I already have a Gmail account, so I guess I will make this my primary email address.

And I can download my emails to my laptop via Windows Live? Or is it best just to leave them at Gmail?

Just another thought - I guess I also have to inform those web sites I belong to where I have registered with the Wananchi email address? What if there are some I dont remember I have registered with?

If you mean , can you download your gmail messages from gmail to the windows live email client ? Yes you can , provided you set up Windows Live with your gmail . Here is a link that should show you how to set it up : http://email.about.com/od/livemaildeskt ... _gmail.htm

I would definitely inform the web sites you belong to about your email change , all of them that you can remember !

But do make sure they aren't saying you can no longer use their server to store your emails - because that is what you are doing. You are just downloading them from their server to your Windows Live Mail.

I'd just go with the Gmail account - I have my Mystery Manor Gmail account download to my Windows Live Mail and it works great. Just set it up and make the Gmail account your default account. Works great.

I use the paid Hotmail for $20 a year, it is fine but would probably be ok with Windows Live. Does it have the ads?

You mean the Gmail downloaded into Windows Live Mail? Nope, no ads. There is one easily ignored ad when using Gmail on line. This is the extent of it... and the account and the storage space is free.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Thanks, I have a Gmail along with the Google and YouTube account but have never used it. I have had the Hotmail one for 12 years and hate to switch now. But maybe I can get some stuff into GMail, gradually.

I had to shut down my hotmail/windows live account recently . I primarily had the account , due to the rather draconian Games For Windows Live drm on a couple of my games . I got an email , or rather , my wife got an email , from a friend , asking if my email address was my hotmail/wl email . He was getting a ton of spam from my hotmail/wl address . Up until that point , I had not used that address in over a month . Not knowing the cause for why this happened , I deleted the account .

The only problem I had with Windows Live mail , is it would not keep a record of sent mail . I had to revert to an older version in order to see those emails . Windows Live mail has a much nicer gui than Mozilla Thunderbird , but , until the trouble with the sent mail is remedied (An issue that has been widely documented . Any Google search will list several sites ) , I will not be able to use it . A bit sad really . Drac , do you have any problems seeing your sent mail with Windows Live Mail ?

I'm assuming you tried the WLM 2011? I had it for about 20 minutes and hated everything about it. I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials and reinstalled WLM 2009 from the old download. I just want simple and easy to use. I love WLM 2009, but they can keep WLM 2011.
