This is my 18 inch screen laptop which I bought two years ago, not the new one I just bought in June this year.

It would not work at all, and so I took the battery out, and now it does start up but only in Safe Mode. When I try to run it in normal mode, it asks me do I want to restore to an earlier date. I say yes and then the screen freezes while Windows is loading up. So I have to manually shut the laptop off.

Any ideas please?

When was the last time you used this laptop ? There is a conflict of some sort , but what exactly , I'm not sure . Do you have anything important on this laptop ? The reason I ask , is it may be necessary to use the Windows repair disk to re install the OS in order for it to boot normally . If that is the case , I would back up any files you can while in safe mode , then make sure your laptop's repair disk is in the drive before you try to start the laptop normally .

As to why your laptop would not boot at all with the battery in , the battery is either dead or in need of being replaced .

Thanks, Faust - I am already starting to back up what is important on this laptop.

Then I can use the back up discs that came with the laptop to format it - Is that what you mean?

Oh, thank heavens it's not that awesome new laptop!

Faust, could this have something to do with having taken the battery out? I remember one of my nephews having an older Dell laptop that wouldn't boot up on the power cord until he replaced the old battery.

By the way, Faust, are you all done with your computer certification exams etc.?

Well, yes, I also wondered if it had anything to do with me taking the battery out, Drac!

I really don't know for sure - maybe Faust will know more. Is this a Dell laptop?

I don't really think so Drac . I was thinking about it earlier , thinking that maybe that the battery had gone bad , & had somehow ruined something inside . However , because the laptop will turn on with the power cable plugged in ruled that out . I know that laptop batteries aren't cheap , I want to say between $40 & $75 US . I sould say it's pretty much a certainty that the battery is bad , & needs to be replaced . If you're already backing things up Rosaboobie , then you might as well re-install the OS . Do you still have the recovery disc , or a standard OS disc ? What about the support cd/dvd (mobo drivers , chipset drivers , video drivers) ? At this stage , a re-install of the OS will not cost anything but time , & it sure isn't going to hurt to do it !

School is finished . I have my certifications , & I'm attempting to find something in IT . So far , no luck . I will not give up !!

Congratulations, Faust! I'm sure something will turn up. My son has 2 semesters left down at Webster University for his degree. He had gotten a paid internship for 3 months with a huge marketing company down in the city. A couple of weeks before the internship was up, they offered him a full-time job. So, he was really lucky and got his foot in the door working with enterprise-level IT. It's a little tough going to school full time and working full time, but he's handling it OK.

Rosaboobie, if I remember correctly, didn't you do a reinstall with recovery discs on your other laptop? I agree with Faust that as long as you have your backup, you have nothing to lose by going for it.

I remember you telling me about your son Drac . Congrats to him !! So far , what I've found , they want anywhere from 2 to 5 years experience or more . Like I said , I'll find something ! My ultimate goal , is to find somewhere that will let me return to school to earn either an MCSA , or an MCITP .

The only thing you have to lose Rosaboobie , is the time it will take to re-install the OS & your programs . Once that is done , your laptop should be in fighting shape !!

I will try and sort this out over the Christmas holidays, Faust, when I will have more time.

Too busy cooking, cleaning, ironing, washing............... I have not done any of this in the 9 years that I have been here - and boy is it hot just now - We are in the height of our "Summer" at the moment!

This link gives temps in Kenya today: http://www.world-temperature.com/countr ... /kenya/547. Amazing to see the huge range from 11 degrees to 31 in one country. I take it you are in the 30 range which is not comfortable to do housework in.

Yes, you are right about the difference in temperatures. Nairobi is always SO cold but personally I love their climate. They even have to have blankets or quilts on their beds at night.

Whereas, like you say, I am on the Coast - I thought it must be 30 or more lately. I am having to get up at 5 a.m. to do all these chores, and even then I am sweating like a pig LOL - Not a pretty sight. But I only have Philip working for me now and he can only do so much in one day, and he is really in charge of the garden, swimming pool and house maintenance, so I have to play my part. It's putting me in good practice for when I move and have to do everything for myself there!

Edit: It was 34 here today, and 36 up in Mombasa yesterday when I drove up there!!

I started to do the backup this morning, and then I suddenly realised that you cant use the CD drive in Safe Mode, can you?

Can I use a flash drive in Safe Mode?

There should not be a problem with doing a backup in safe mode .
