Do people watch DVDs much now?

Postby Kickaha » Sun Nov 09, 2014 6:11 am

I'm always behind the times and I've only just got into watching TV shows streamed over the web. Have people moved away from DVDs and Blu-Rays and now rely on Netflix and Hulu and the like?

For me it's a way of checking out stuff I might buy DVDs of if I like it. I still having physical copies of books / films / games etc apart from the space they take up!

I still must watch movies either on DVD or through our satellite TV subscription. I have wireless broadband for internet and although it not very fast, it's fast enough. The problem is that I have a 25 GB a month data cap and they throttle my speeds WAY down after 65 MB.

How mean! That's a good point - better check if there's a cap on our broadband!

When you live out in the country, there aren't many options in the US. My older son works in IT for a huge marketing company in St. Louis with offices in several other states. He's used to having screaming fast internet through our local cable company. But they are building a new house out in the country and he is about to go to even less of an internet connection than I have! He may have to resort to a "hot spot" with their cell phone company with data caps of 5 GB or something like that!

I've said before that the UK and other countries just laugh at us here in the US - you are light years ahead of us!

My internet through my cable company is fast enough and doesn't have a cap, but since I spend too much time in my computer chair as it is, I prefer to watch movies and tv from my comfy chair.

You can get Netflix subscriptions for your TV too. Actually my son in Denver doesn't even have a cable subscription. They only have internet and Netflix. They watch everything on their TV through Netflix Streaming. I think they only pay like $8 a month for one TV.

I have a Smart TV which allows me to do that and it's very cool!

I have a smart TV but exchanged my "smart" phone for a lovely flip phone. Much easier to use and miles cheaper.

The libraries here let people take out DVDs so I watch them. I also have a pretty large movie collection on DVD, but I may end up having to sell them (if they are still worth something). :(

That would be awful, Jude. Hope you don't have to sell them... We have little Kiosks in front of the drug and grocery stores where you can rent DVDs. Some day I need to look for a DVD of my favorite movie - Young Frankenstein.

For me it's the same as with games. I love a physical copy. I have a massive DVD collection (which takes up a lot of space). And I now own a PS3 which also reads blu-ray. So I'm starting a blu-ray collection. However I also have netflix (with Chromecast support) and it is really convenient. Especially for series and movies you want to watch, but not own. But it is shame that it's up to netflix what to watch. They pulled the plug on The Walking Dead and now I can't watch it anymore. So they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
