Creating a website

Postby Rosaboobie » Tue Jan 19, 2016 3:33 am

Would anyone here know - is it difficult to create and maintain your own web site? I have a property I need to advertise for sale, and friends here have recommended I go down this avenue.

I know they vary tremendously, depending on what you want to accomplish. Kickaha is probably the best one to answer that because he maintains his own website from your area of the world.

LadyK has beaten me to it. I was also going to recommend you contact Kickaha. If you go this route, once you get a website up and running to advertise the property, then you will need to find a way to push this website so that people looking for property in Orkney will find it. I see a LOT of people trying to sell property pushing the website on Facebook. That's a great way to get it in front of a lot of people.

You will need to register a domain name, (eg. rosaboobie@sanday.com) and purchase some web space. Then you will need to use some kind of programming to post your information. There are many companies that offer these things as a package. The easiest is what is referred to as WYSIWYG or "what you see is what you get." That means it's simple programming without a lot of complicated coding required. For instance, Mystery Manor is NOT WYSIWYG!! Everything you see here is the result of a lot of complicated work.

I operate and maintain our American Legion website. It is a WYSIWYG type... We pay $240 per year to maintain our domain name and use the template that was provided. I am able to add, subtract and edit my information. But all the real work has been done in the template provided. Check it out here... http://www.post297.com/

Everything you see is stuff I have added... I took the photos and uploaded them; I write the text; I add information to each of the pages on the left. Getting everything up and running to reflect our Post was very time-consuming, but once I got the website to reflect US, then it's fairly easy to maintain.

I know that there are apps/programs for creating webpages, but I am not up-to-date on the current ones. I created my website (and my mother's memorial site "by hand" -- just using HTML code and then uploading the pages and the content using a free FTP app (Cyberduck, but there are others), after I purchased some space from MacHighway.com (and also licensed my domain names for the sites through them). I haven't updated my site in a really long time, but if you want to take a look: http://www.wondrousuniverse.com My mother's memorial site is a bit more elaborate: http://www.artworkbyclare.com

The easiest way (other than paying someone to do it for you) is to find a company that offers webspace which also offers domain name licensing and an online webpage creator and uploader as part of their deal. Make sure that they have good tech support, too. Then test the website and make sure all the links work properly and that everything displays correctly.

Sorry for being late to this party!

If you're starting from scratch then it may be worth looking at sites like http://www.weebly.com/ and http://www.wix.com/. I haven't used these myself but think this is a good way to start and gain confidence.

As Jude and Draclvr say you can get webspace and domain name and help with creating a website from a hosting company. If what you want on the web is a few pictures of your house then you may not need very much webspace at all. There are a number of website creation tools out there which claim to be user friendly. Apple did one called iWeb which I used.

People do create websites in WordPress (particularly blogs) and even hand-crafted HTML as Jude said. This is getting more technical than perhaps you want RB?

Maintaining websites is harder than creating them IMHO. Maintaining my own website takes time, and something like Mystery Manor is a labour of love.

To get people you don't know to find your website - that is difficult. If the property is somewhere with an uncommon name then that'll help. Perhaps make sure the page has at the top "Property for sale in Chipping Norton" or wherever the place is. It's a difficult game to get your website noticed.

Thanks Kickaha - for sure I dont want anything too technical or time consuming. I just need to put a number of photos and information just about the property, and nothing else

So how does one manage to make their website come up on a Google search, I ask myself?

And there is the rub, Rosaboobie. You must think of what someone would put into a search engine and then make sure your web page has something at the very top that fulfills that search request... sort of like Kickaha suggested. You will need to make sure it is in search results that usually bring up properties offered by real estate companies. Creating the website is just the beginning - getting it noticed is the hard part. As I mentioned, Facebook is used a LOT by individuals advertising properties through a website.

Here are some that I found doing a Bing search on "website creation UK."

Thank you for those links - very helpful.

A local property which had been on the Estate Agents books for quite a long time was sold in this way, and quite quickly once they created their own website!

With Facebook, do you mean just post a general posting about my property?

Yes... I've seen it many times. "Please share this property listing as it is available for a very good price" or some such, followed by a link to the website.

Sometimes the Estate Agents don't push a property aggressively enough... if you do it yourself, you can devote all your attention to it. You can include links to the Orkney/Sanday websites with all the advantages of living there and even include pictures like the ones from your new Ranger - with her permission, of course. I'd be glad to help you any way possible from afar!

Thank you - we are in the throes of clearing and cleaning it out just now - The previous owner left loads of stuff - good stuff - not rubbish, so once that is done, I will start on this project.

Pictures... lots of pictures for me! I know this is not a very happy project for you, but I am so utterly curious about this place. Who is helping you?

There are websites like http://www.easiersale.co.uk and http://www.propertysell.co.uk which claim free listings. One would need to check the small print of course.
