Backups to the cloud

Postby Kickaha » Mon Aug 07, 2017 4:17 pm

Not sure if this fits in this room or the general one.

I backup the Mac I have to external hard drives, keeping some off site for security. I've started looking at also backing up some of the files to the cloud as well for additional peace of mind.

What experiences have people had with backing up to the cloud? I know the software used may well be different for PCs than Macs of course, but I'm interested in how people have got on with online backups.

I have used Carbonite for several years now and I really like it. I think it's about $60 US per year which I think is quite reasonable. I've never had a catastrophic failure I had to restore from, but I have needed to restore some files several times. I also create an image backup on a local exterior hard drive which will include my OS. I know they also support Macs.

I spoke with a guy at work who uses Amazon S3 to backup his stuff to - I'm glad I don't have as many files as he does as he has 7TB backed up to the cloud!

I am looking at a bit more than that Draclvr but nowhere near 7TB! This guy has loads of photos and videos apparently (that he's taken.)

That's kind of what I figured! Hopefully, you have a good internet service as the initial upload can take quite a long time.

I'm experimenting with ArqBackup going to Amazon Glacier - will need to see what the charges are like, and also how slow the uploading is. It's got a long way to backup all the files!

Well the software works OK - but upload speed is not fast enough by one order of magnitude. I'm going to try another Internet provider but that will take time to put in place. Sigh. Things are never simple!

Naturally!

My initial backup took almost 2 weeks. But I have zero choice of ISPs out here in the country. It's my provider or nothing. The only other option is satellite and I know of no one who likes it.

I would settle for two weeks but my estimate was more like 10 weeks!

Progress is slow on this but I'm coming to the conclusion that for me it's better to parcel up groups of files into large zips (or files like zips) and manually upload those to the cloud. Synching with the number of small files I have takes forever and hogs the machine. I will also maintain a bootable backup separately as another kind of backup.
